The number of veterans in the US is declining each year. As a result, fewer and fewer opportunities exist for those who served to connect with fellow veterans. The following are five of the top support groups that provide a voice for this demographic:

  1. The American Legion – The oldest, largest and most influential veterans service organization in the United States
  2. Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) – Founded in 1899, it is the nation’s oldest and largest war veterans organization
  3. Disabled American Veterans (DAV) – An independent non-profit corporation that provides assistance to disabled military personnel and their families
  4. Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans Association (IAVA) – A nonprofit 501(c)(19) membership organization for post 9/11 era veterans; they are a nonpartisan advocacy group that works with government agencies to address issues affecting these vets
  5. Wounded Warrior Project® – America’s only national charity exclusively serving wounded warriors from all conflicts since 2001
